Westminster Labour councillors believe that Westminster Council needs to do more to ensure playgrounds are inclusive and allow equal access to children with disabilities. We believe all Westminster playgrounds should have equipment that can be used by a variety of children with special needs to play together with children without additional needs.
At the moment, very few playgrounds have equipment that is suitable for children with disabilities. Some playgrounds have a single item that enables access for users with mobility difficulties but even these are rarely used because they are not advertised sufficiently and because a single item isn’t really enough to make it worth the while for parents to bring their child to that playground.
We want to see a commitment from Westminster council to ensure that all new refurbishment of playgrounds considers the needs of children with a variety of disabilities and that a scoping exercise is done to explore sites where new inclusive playgrounds could be installed. We also want to see information signs that explain how the equipment should be used and that announces to all users that the playground is inclusive and that children with disabilities are welcome.
