Westminster’s Labour Councillors have announced plans to refurbish eight central London public toilets, ensuring that visitors to the city have access to new and improved facilities.
More than £6.5 million will be invested this year to upgrade public toilet facilities in the West End, with a further £6.2 million proposed for the next financial year. Toilets at Victoria Embankment, Parliament Street, Piccadilly Circus and Green Park will all receive an extensive refurbishment in 2024/2025 with toilets in Carnaby Street, Westminster Pier, Covent Garden and Leicester Square to be upgraded the following year.
In addition, the council has invested £285k this year to refresh its neighbourhood public toilets in Marylebone, St John’s Wood and Bayswater, and £1.8million to replace and upgrade urinals and Automatic Public Conveniences. Toilets in Church Street market have been refurbished and there are plans for new public toilets at Maida Hill piazza in north Paddington.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet Member for City Management and Air Quality, said:
“The council is proud of its considerable investment in public toilets for the benefit of residents and visitors. Our aim is to provide high quality conveniences for the public to use.
“We are investing £12.7million on an extensive refurbishment of our eight West End public toilets, as well as spending more than £1.8million on upgrading and replacing urinals and APCs, and £285k on refreshing our neighbourhood toilets.
“Making sure Westminster’s streets are clean and safe is the council’s top priority. Our City Inspectors and street cleaning teams run a 24/7 service to deal with problems like street urination and defecation as quickly as possible.
“We also provide a network of temporary toilets in the West Ed at weekends and during major events to address the increase in demand for toilets during busier times.”
Our work has been recognised with all three of our neighbourhood toilets being awarded ‘Platinum’ in the ‘Loo of the Year Awards 2024’.”
