Cleaning up after Carnival is always a major operation.
With over two million people attending Carnival, clearing the rubbish is a big job for the Council’s contractors, Veolia.
Last year, in 2023, Veolia collected 80.9 tonnes of rubbish, of which 2.7 tonnes was recyclables (3.4%).
This year Veolia collected 75.6 tonnes of rubbish, slightly less than the previous year, but this year 7.6 tonnes was recyclables (10%) – three times more than in 2023.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet member for City Management and Air Quality, said:
“The Carnival clean-up operation was, once again, a major operation successfully carried out by the Council’s contractors, Veolia. The increase in recycling from 3.4% to 10% is a real success which we hope to build in in future years.”
